Multisystemic Therapy for Substance Abuse

University Behavioral Associates Multisystemic Therapy for Substance Abuse is a preventative program funded by the NYC Administration for Children's Services.  MST-SA is an evidence based treatment that addresses the multiple needs of families with substance-abusing teens (or teens at risk of substance abuse) within their community.  The goal of the program is to break the cycle of negative behavior among at-risk teens and help parents regain control of their families by keeping teens at home, in school, and out of trouble.

What can I expect from MST-SA?

Your MST therapist will work intensively with you approximately three times per week for 3-5 months in the privacy of your own home to help you develop:

  • Skills to manage your child's behaviors, including truancy, not following house rules, aggression, substance use, and/or criminal activity
  • Specific behavior plans and tools tailored to support your needs

MST therapists will work with your family to:

  • Assess behaviors you would like your child to change
  • Identify supports that can assist you in managing your child's behaviors
  • Build stronger relationships with your child's school or identify an appropriate school setting
  • Develop strategies to help you decrease your child's unwanted behaviors
  • Monitor and address your child's substance use
